Summary

When users want to sync their app/product to their bank accounts, they must enter their login credentials into the product, then grant the product permission to connect to their bank.

A key question we wanted to solve was, how do we improve and create a secure Intuit product + bank login experience that solves for different Intuit products (e.g. Mint, QuickBooks) and for different banks - while ensuring an easy and seamless experience for customers.

How I worked

To answer the above question, I started by partnering with my core team, Intuit product teams, and different banks, to better understand key requirements. I also knew at a minimum, the experience would need to give customers the same (if not more) sense of security than the current experience.

I never worked on secure login before, so I did my research. I met with the PM and developers across all teams to better understand the business and technical requirements.I also conducted due diligence by understanding how other companies executed their connections. I was especially interested in what users commonly see today.

I then moved into ideation mode. I sketched numerous experiences for Intuit, for mobile and web, then held design reviews with our cross-functional internal teams (my core team, Mint and QuickBooks), which included PMs, Developers, Architects, and Designers. I was able to quickly iterate the designs, and ensure the design was feasible, and solved across business, technical, and design needs.

To ensure we removed any unintended barriers, I created prototypes from the concept and took it into user research. From this, I was able to iron out any kinks and determine if design decisions made worked well with customers, and create a design that we were ready to share with the banks.

Another goal of our widget is to create a consistent login experience for our customers across different banks. So, as someone is connecting their product (e.g. Mint, QuickBooks Online) with any bank, they will be familiar with the pattern and be able to confidently log in. To do this, I partnered with my visual designer to create detailed specs on the widget to give to the different banks, and show them what’s fixed vs. flexible in the design. We know creating alignment across all banks is a challenge since many have strict branding guidelines they cannot diverge from. However, in the cases where banks have that flexibility, I wanted to be ready to influence the bank’s design.
